Mossack Fonseca and the Panama Papers leak
2.6 TB leaked, then the firm ceased to exist.
What happened
The Panama Papers comprised 11.5 million files (about 2.6 TB) covering decades of work by Mossack Fonseca. The disclosure triggered investigations and political consequences around the world. The firm closed in 2018, citing the reputational and operational damage that followed the leak.
Security researchers examining Mossack Fonseca's public systems found outdated WordPress and Drupal components with known critical vulnerabilities, alongside internet-facing services handling highly sensitive client information. The firm entrusted decades of confidential legal data to technology that had not been maintained against well-known attack methods. That exposed and outdated attack surface left one of the world's most sensitive legal datasets behind inadequate technical defenses.
What would have changed it
Unmanaged public systems turn known vulnerabilities into permanent exposure. We identify exposed systems and fix their vulnerabilities before sensitive client data is placed at risk.
